KEEPING WASTE AT BAY, EVERY STEP OF THE WAY
Who we are
The Kakuma Waste Management team is made up of a diverse group of trailblazers who are fully and wholly committed to preserving the environment and educating the community of Kakuma on sustainable waste solutions.
Our three main focus areas are Plastic, Paper and Glass. We keep the landfills clear of these waste items through Upcycling (repurposing of discarded material to create products of high quality and value) which, in turn, creates entrepreneurship opportunities for those manufacturing these products.
Kakuma may be a refugee camp but it is one that is on the move and going in the right direction! Our team is passionate about preserving the planet and fully dedicated to empowering the community through sustainable projects that can generate steady income for households.
Take a look at some of the images in our Gallery for more insight into the work we so diligently do.
OUR PROJECT
KK Waste managers has developed a strategic and approaches on how to deal with and manage waste disposal challenges within the camp. This include collection, segregation and treatment of waste. Our treatment shall incorperate ways like open dumping grounds, sanitary land fill, composting and inceneration. Our final activity will be provision of collection points, transportation facilities and disgnated dumping sites. Our solutions can be used to enhance sustainability through collaboration with the County Government of Turkana who in their capacity will develop more by-laws on waste management and help on the enforcement. KK Waste managers guarantee that the approaches given on management of waste shall provide clean environment, fertile soils, good health and prevention of suffocation of soil micro-organisms.
Our target group in this project are the refugees and host community living within Kakuma Refugee camp who are directly being affected by the problem KK waste managers is solving. Once we initiate our solution, it is the same target group that will enjoy aesthetic environment, good health, good soils and clean water.
The impact of our solution is that there will be reduction in waste generation by 20%, increased recycling rate by 30%, minimize improper waste disposal and littering, and creation of employment opportunities.
