MAKUYU AQUAPONICS: Smart aquaponic solutions for food security and sustainable farming

Developed during the SEED4AFRICA national hackathon in Kenya, MAKUYU AQUAPONICS is an innovative agribusiness initiative promoting aquaponics as a practical, scalable and climate-resilient solution for food production. The project addresses the limitations of rain-fed agriculture by integrating fish farming and soil-less crop cultivation in a controlled, resource-efficient system that enables year-round production.

At the core of the business idea is the development of locally adapted aquaponic systems that give farmers greater control over growing conditions while significantly reducing water use, fertiliser inputs and environmental impact. By recycling nutrient-rich water from fish tanks to feed plants, Makuyu Aquaponics minimises waste and promotes sustainable intensification of food production in both rural and urban contexts.

The initiative offers a diversified portfolio of products and services, including hybrid beginner-friendly aquaponic kits, vertical aquaponics systems for space-constrained environments, nutrient film technology (NFT) systems, and AI-powered aquaponic solutions for real-time monitoring of water quality, fish health and plant growth. In parallel, Makuyu Aquaponics provides consulting, training workshops, knowledge dissemination and delivery services, supporting clients throughout the adoption process.

Market research highlights strong demand for fish and high-quality produce in the densely populated Makuyu area, alongside limited competition and growing interest in sustainable farming technologies. The project positions itself competitively by offering fair pricing, drought-resistant production systems and education-based services that create local employment and skills development opportunities.

By combining technological innovation, sustainability and capacity building, MAKUYU AQUAPONICS fully reflects the SEED4AFRICA vision of empowering communities with smart farming solutions that enhance food security, resilience and environmental stewardship.
