GREEN HARVEST: Urban sustainable farming through vertical agriculture and aquaponics

Developed during the SEED4AFRICA national hackathon in South Africa, GREEN HARVEST is an innovative agribusiness initiative that aims to revolutionise food production in urban environments through sustainable farming practices. The project responds to global challenges such as food insecurity, water scarcity and environmental degradation, while actively contributing to key Sustainable Development Goals, including Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6) and Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12).

At the core of GREEN HARVEST is the integration of vertical farming technology with aquaponics, enabling the production of organic fruits, vegetables and fish in space-efficient, water-saving systems. This approach drastically reduces water use, eliminates the need for harmful pesticides and fertilisers, and lowers carbon emissions by shortening supply chains and enabling local production in urban areas. The use of renewable energy sources, such as solar panels and wind turbines, further strengthens the environmental sustainability of the model.

GREEN HARVEST offers a diverse portfolio of products and services, including fresh organic produce, sustainably farmed fish, educational workshops and farm tours for schools and communities, and consulting services for individuals and businesses interested in adopting sustainable farming practices. Partnerships with local restaurants and grocery stores reinforce market access and promote locally sourced food systems.

Market research highlights a growing demand for organic, locally produced food driven by increased environmental awareness and urbanisation. GREEN HARVEST differentiates itself through year-round production, strong community engagement and a holistic sustainability vision that combines innovation, education and entrepreneurship.

By combining technological innovation, environmental responsibility and community empowerment, GREEN HARVEST fully embodies the SEED4AFRICA vision of developing inclusive, climate-smart agribusiness solutions that foster resilient food systems and sustainable urban development.
