GREEN RAMS FARM: Modernising sheep farming and meat supply in Benin

GREEN RAMS FARM is an innovative agribusiness concept created during the SEED4AFRICA national hackathon in Benin, designed to strengthen local food systems by modernising sheep farming and the supply of fresh, high-quality ovine meat in Benin. The initiative responds to persistent challenges in livestock production and meat availability, including dependency on imports, price fluctuations and irregular supply during non-festive periods.

At the heart of GREEN RAMS FARM is a responsible and optimised livestock production model focused on Djallonké and Sahelian sheep breeds, raised in healthy, chemical-free conditions that respect animal welfare and traditional practices. The project emphasises complete traceability from farm to table, ensuring that every animal and piece of meat can be tracked back to its source—a key value proposition that guarantees quality and builds consumer trust.

The business combines traditional animal husbandry with digital innovation: an intuitive online platform allows families, restaurants, butchers and event organisers to order fresh meat or whole animals directly, with flexible delivery and subscription options that adapt to diverse customer needs. This digital component simplifies access to quality products while creating new market pathways for small and medium-scale farmers.

GREEN RAMS FARM also adopts a customer-centred service model, offering tailored supply solutions for daily household consumption, regular business needs, and special occasions such as weddings or religious festivals. Subscriptions and flexible orders position the business as a reliable partner for both individual consumers and commercial clients, addressing supply inconsistency in the local market.

With its blend of sustainable livestock practices, digital commerce and market responsiveness, GREEN RAMS FARM illustrates how agricultural entrepreneurship can create value across the supply chain while supporting local economic development and food security in West Africa.
