Developed during the SEED4AFRICA national hackathon in Kenya, CHICKEN REARING is a community-based agribusiness initiative aimed at reducing poverty and malnutrition by promoting small- to medium-scale poultry farming at household level. The business idea responds to persistent challenges faced by low-income families, particularly child malnutrition and lack of stable income sources, by leveraging an accessible and proven agricultural activity.
At the core of the initiative is a simple and scalable model: encouraging each household to start by rearing as few as 10 chickens. With basic management practices, families can begin egg production within five months, generating daily eggs for both household nutrition and income. The model demonstrates that even small flocks can provide meaningful economic returns, while ensuring regular access to affordable protein for children and vulnerable family members.
The business idea integrates progressive growth and circular use of resources. As households gain experience, chicken numbers can be gradually increased, leading to higher egg production and income. Older chickens that stop laying eggs are sold for meat, creating an additional revenue stream and reducing waste. This approach strengthens household resilience while maintaining low entry costs and manageable risk.
From an economic perspective, CHICKEN REARING is designed to be inclusive and replicable. Market analysis highlights strong demand for eggs and poultry products, while the affordability of starting with a small flock makes the model suitable for widespread adoption. Over time, participating households can significantly improve their livelihoods through increased production and sales.
By combining nutrition improvement, income generation and grassroots entrepreneurship, CHICKEN REARING reflects the SEED4AFRICA vision of empowering communities with practical, sustainable agribusiness solutions that enhance food security and reduce poverty.
