Developed during the SEED4AFRICA national hackathon in Benin, CLEAN WATER is an innovative agribusiness initiative addressing one of the most critical challenges in Northern Benin: the degradation and pollution of livestock drinking ponds under increasing climate pressure. The business idea focuses on sustainable water management solutions that improve animal health, productivity and community resilience in pastoral and agropastoral systems.
At the heart of CLEAN WATER is the use of filter plants as natural water purification systems for livestock ponds. These ponds are often used for multiple purposes—watering livestock, domestic activities, fishing, agriculture and construction—leading to siltation, pollution and declining water quality. CLEAN WATER introduces ecological water-cleansing processes that restore pond quality without chemical treatments, offering a low-cost and environmentally friendly solution adapted to local conditions.
Beyond the technical solution, CLEAN WATER adopts a community-centred business model. The initiative empowers herders, farmers, pond managers, municipalities and NGOs through training on the production and use of filter plants, water-cleansing techniques and sustainable pond management. In addition to product deployment, the business offers consulting services and partnerships with local authorities and organisations to scale the approach across regions and countries.
The project is strongly aligned with global sustainability objectives, contributing directly to five Sustainable Development Goals: Zero Hunger (SDG 2), Good Health and Well-Being (SDG 3), Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6), Responsible Consumption and Production (SDG 12) and Climate Action (SDG 13). Market research indicates that over 500 livestock ponds in Benin face similar pollution challenges, highlighting both the relevance and scalability of the solution in a currently underserved market.
By combining nature-based innovation, climate adaptation and community empowerment, CLEAN WATER fully reflects the SEED4AFRICA vision of developing practical, inclusive and sustainable agribusiness solutions for Africa’s future.
