Developed during the SEED4AFRICA national hackathon in Benin, GREEN SMART AFRICA is an innovative agribusiness idea aimed at transforming vegetable production in Sub-Saharan Africa through smart, sustainable and locally adapted farming systems. The initiative responds to the growing challenges faced by small and medium-scale farmers, including climate change, water scarcity, low productivity, and limited access to modern agricultural technologies.
At the core of GREEN SMART AFRICA is the introduction of intelligent greenhouse and soilless (hydroponic) cultivation systems, specifically designed for hot and arid environments. By combining bioclimatic greenhouse structures, automated irrigation and fertigation systems, environmental sensors and alarm-based monitoring, the solution enables farmers to better control temperature, water use, and plant nutrition. This allows for year-round tomato production, higher yields, reduced pesticide use and improved product quality, even under extreme climatic conditions.
Beyond technology, GREEN SMART AFRICA proposes an integrated service model. In addition to designing and installing smart greenhouses and irrigation systems, the initiative offers delivery, maintenance, training, marketing support and financial advisory services. This holistic approach ensures that farmers are not only equipped with innovative tools, but also supported in managing their farms efficiently and profitably over time.
Sustainability is a central pillar of the business idea. GREEN SMART AFRICA promotes the use of local resources, ecological agronomic practices, efficient water management and integrated pest management, reducing environmental impact while strengthening farmer resilience. The multidisciplinary team behind the project brings together expertise in crop science, water management, biotechnology, pest control and agroecology, ensuring that the proposed solutions are both technically sound and socially relevant.
By bridging digital innovation and sustainable agriculture, GREEN SMART AFRICA embodies the mission of the SEED4AFRICA project: empowering future agripreneurs to co-create smart farming solutions that foster food security, economic opportunity and environmental sustainability across Africa.
